1- Make it specific
“To get healthy.” “Finally get in shape.” “I want to tone up.” What do these mean exactly? What are you supposed to be doing? Lifting weights? Running? Eating fewer calories? Eating healthier foods? Removing soda and other unhealthy beverages from your diet? Eating fewer desserts?
2- Make it measurable
What does “toning up” mean to you? What is “in shape”? How will you measure these goals? Are you trying to increase endurance? Do you want to get stronger? Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to fit in old clothing again?
3- Enlist a partner
Have someone to hold you accountable. Have someone push you when you feel like giving up. Have someone pick you up after you stumble.
4- Know what you don’t know
Don’t be afraid to seek out advice and help from more knowledgeable people. If you have never stepped foot in a gym before chances are you do not know how to design a safe and effective workout.
5- Keep it realistic
Rome wasn’t built in a day. You will not lose 30 pounds in one month (no matter what the infomercials claim). You can’t go from couch potato to marathon runner in a few weeks. Start slow and keep at it until your goal is reached.
